MILDENHALL v HEATHENS, PREVIEW

Friday June 07, 2019
CRADLEY look to return to winning ways when they make the trip to historic rivals Mildenhall on Sunday (3pm).

The two sides have contested several items of National League silverware over the years and have already enjoyed one terrific battle this season when the Anchor Logistics Heathens pulled off a 46-44 win at Monmore courtesy of a dramatic last-heat 5-1.

Since then, the Fen Tigers have experienced mixed fortunes, losing at home to Kent in the National Trophy before beating Leicester at West Row but not by enough to make progress in the KO Cup.

Heathens themselves are off the back of a defeat having gone down by six points at home to Belle Vue on Monday.

New signing Sheldon Davies makes his debut having replaced Lewis Whitmore, and has already appeared twice at Mildenhall this season scoring four points on both occasions, whilst Daniel Halsey faces his former club.

And another recent recruit Jack Smith is targeting a big score at the Suffolk venue having fallen short of his own standards in his first appearance for the club.

Smith won Heat 11 against the Colts but then missed out in Heats 13 and 15 as Kyle Bickley and Leon Flint secured the points for their side.

Said Smith: “Monday was only my second meeting in twenty days so I wasn’t really race-sharp and race-fit and I struggled, and I want to apologise to the fans and management for that.

“On Sunday at Mildenhall I’ll make sure I turn up this time and score the big points. I’ve just got to get my race sharpness back.

“This is my job and my profession, I need to be on the bike more and that’s what I’m trying to do, and I have a good run coming up later this month.”

Mildenhall name a full-strength side led by former Heathens favourite Danny Ayres, who has been in blistering form of late and has qualified for his first British Final.

MILDENHALL: Danny Ayres, Matt Marson, David Wallinger, Charlie Brooks, Jason Edwards, Elliot Kelly, Macauley Leek.
CRADLEY: Max Clegg, Sheldon Davies, Daniel Halsey, Luke Harris, Jack Smith, Tom Spencer, Harry McGurk.
